Many people feel anxious or fearful about the idea of seeing the dentist even though it is for their own good. Due to this, sedation dentistry is being offered at dental offices to make sure that patients will have a pleasant experience all the time. However, it is essential for everyone to know that not every procedure performed by dentists are painful. There is even one treatment that not many people are familiar about but is highly effective in the prevention of tooth decay – dental sealants!
The application of the dental sealant is one of the easiest, painless, and quickest procedure many people can benefit from. It can even be an excellent treatment that children can avail without causing them any stress or fear.
At East Cobb Family Dentistry, we believe in the potential of dental sealants that is why we included it in our Preventive Services. We perform the procedure to make sure that our patients’ teeth can stay protected against harmful substances like bacteria, acids, and food particles.
What are dental sealants and how are they applied?
Dental sealants are thin, plastic coatings placed on the chewing surfaces of the teeth. It aims to cover the deep portions of the molars and premolars which are most vulnerable to cavities. The dentist carefully applies the material only on the dip pits to not disturb the normal occlusions of the teeth.
Cleaning the tooth
The tooth to be treated needs to be cleaned thoroughly to make sure that the sealant material will adhere properly. A certain dental apparatus will be used to scrub the chewing surfaces properly including the pits.
An etching solution will be applied on the surface to roughen it sightly. It will be placed only for a few seconds and will be rinsed off afterward. One added benefit of the solution is it kills the bacteria that resides the tooth surface into the pits. The site should remain dry since it may require the reapplication of the etching solution if contaminated with saliva.
The sealant material will be affixed on the tooth using a small brush. Due to its liquidity, it would flow freely to the pits. Dentists would not fill in the chewing surface; it will be applied only on the areas that can home harmful particles.
A special light will be used to harden the sealant material quickly. It is an essential step for the sealant will stay in its liquid form unless exposed to the curing light.
The dentists will check the application of the sealant and perform any necessary adjustments. They will make sure that there are no spaces left vulnerable to ensure that the teeth will stay protected.
