Choosing a Family Dentist: Three Things to Consider for Oral Health, Marietta

BY East Cobb Family Dentistry
  1. Oral health is an issue which is very much in our control at most times and should be told to us by any good family dentist. If we practice good oral health and hygiene, we can have a set of teeth which last for a long time. For this, we should brush our teeth at least twice daily for at least two minutes each time. Also, we should use the correct technique for brushing our teeth. Also, it is a must to go in for dental flossing at least once in a day. Each one of us should also make it a point to go in for dental check-ups on a regular basis. This is so that we can be screened for gingivitis and oral cancer, among other ailments. These ailments tend to go out of proportion. Gingivitis, if unchecked, can lead to periodontitis. Also, oral cancer can become life-threatening if it is not detected at an early stage.
  2. If the tooth or teeth are decayed, broken or stained, one can opt for different lines of treatment, as per any good family dentist. If the tooth can be restored, one should go in for root canal treatment. There is a misnomer that root canal treatment is very painful. This is not so. The only discomfort involved in the entire procedure is that of the injections which are used for this procedure. Other than this, there is hardly any other discomfort. If the tooth cannot be restored, one can have it extracted out and then even opt for a dental implant. Dental implants can last the entire lifetime of the patient if they are cared for properly. Dentures, on the other hand, need to be changed after every five to seven years. These may become loose or ill-fitting with time. Also, the facial appearance of the patient alters by a bit if dentures are used. Dental implants make the face of the patient appear almost like normal. Also, the eating, smiling and talking pattern of the patient does not change much with dental implants.
  3. At times, teeth get stained or yellowed. One can opt for teeth whitening procedure for this. This can be done at home or in the dental clinic. For at home procedures, one can go in for teeth whitening trays which are custom-manufactured in the dental laboratory. These need to be worn each day for a given number of hours for a given number of days. One can also use teeth whitening toothpaste and gums. However, their effect is temporary. One needs to look after dental hygiene well after getting the teeth whitening done since this can easily be reversed. At the dental clinic, one uses an activating gel on the teeth. Before this, the teeth are prepped up. Then the gel is smeared all over on the teeth. A laser light is passed over this at a given intensity for a given duration of time. The teeth get whitened by several grades due to this. The procedure may be repeated for best possible results.
