Preventing Tooth Decay in Children

BY East Cobb Family Dentistry

Taking care of your baby or toddler’s teeth requires vigilance and patience. These little bundles of joy are not always cooperative when it comes to anyone putting anything inside their mouths. That said, below are a few practical and helpful tips to guide you in starting your child on a health oral regimen as early as possible.

  • From birth to baby’s first birthday, wipe their gums gently with a soft washcloth as soon as possible after every feeding.
  • As soon as the first teeth erupt, use a soft baby toothbrush to clean them. Your dentist will be able to advise you on which fluoride toothpaste to use. Remember, a smidgen goes a long way.
  • Check if your water is fluoridated. Have well water professionally tested to see if it contains adequate natural fluoride. Ask your dentist for the appropriate fluoride supplement for your child if the fluoride level in your water is not adequate.
  • Get your child in the habit of drinking water with their meals. If you must let them have juice (to keep the hollering levels in your house to within acceptable decibels), limit it to four to six ounces per day. Give it to your child only as part of a meal so they do not get in the habit of drinking juice from a sippy cup all day. Most commercial fruit juices have added sugars and sugar is one of a healthy mouth’s worst enemies.
  • Inquire about sealants from your dentist. He or she will know best if it is necessary to protect your child’s teeth and when best to apply it.

Children are excellent mimics. The best way to teach them to take care of their teeth and gums is for them to see you doing the same on a constant basis. By making sure you practice healthy oral hygiene, you set your child on the same road as early as possible. Our dedicated team of Marietta dentists here at East Cobb Dentistry can help you and your entire family achieve and maintain a healthy oral environment.
